MHPSS in peacebuilding and conflict prevention
Project type
Training
Date
July-November 2023
Location
Turkmenistan
Role
Vitalii Klymchuk served as a MHPSS Expert and Trainer, leading the project
The project was implemented in Turkmenistan to strengthen mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for vulnerable populations, with a particular focus on youth-at-risk and women. Led by Vitalii Klymchuk and commissioned by UNDP, the initiative aimed to develop and deliver a culturally sensitive and evidence-based MHPSS training curriculum, as well as to build national capacity through a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme.
The project began with consultations to identify local training needs and map traditional and cultural approaches to MHPSS. Insights from these consultations were used to design a structured training outline and a comprehensive five-day training curriculum. The curriculum included modules on mental health in the peacebuilding context, the biopsychosocial model, trauma-informed care, scalable psychological interventions, and practical psychosocial support skills. Special attention was given to gender aspects, interagency collaboration, and ethical service provision.
In October 2023, the training materials were finalised and included a Training Guide, Participant Workbook, MHPSS Manual, knowledge tests, and feedback tools. These materials were also prepared for digital adaptation to allow for online, self-paced learning.
In November 2023, a five-day ToT session was delivered to 20 national professionals. The training was well-received, with participants reporting high levels of satisfaction and increased knowledge. Pre- and post-tests showed an increase in correct responses from an average of 68% to 81%. Feedback highlighted the engaging, participatory approach and practical applicability of the training, with participants expressing readiness to replicate the training with groups such as teachers, police officers, and social workers.
As a result, the project successfully developed local capacity to deliver MHPSS interventions and contributed to building a sustainable, culturally grounded approach to mental health support in Turkmenistan.
